California Red are a recent breed, developed in California in the 1970s. They are the result of mating Tunis sheep (wooly fleece) with Barbados (a sheep with hair instead of wool). The idea was to create a breed that would be good for meat, with no bothersome fleece to shear. Happily for the sheep–and for us–the experiment was a failure. California Red turned out to be a wonderful fiber animal, with fine, abundant fleece that is soft to the touch, durable, and comes undyed, with a slight cinnamon tint.Specifications
